Nothing says an East coast summer like ocean blue hues. From fresh blueberries to waves crashing against the sand, blue hues emanate summer. Although not an ideal location to dip into a summer read, local New Hampshire and Maine fruit farms do have the best pick-your-own blueberries.
My family’s tried and true location for blueberry picking has always been Butternut Farm in Farmington, New Hampshire. This family own fruit Farm bears crisp apples in the fall, sweet strawberries in the early summer, and of course big blueberries ripe during the midsummer. With goats and peacocks calling this fruit Farm home, bring along the little ones for an entertaining afternoon. My family’s trip to Butternut Farm would not be complete without a stop at the Cider House for small batch craft hard cider and fresh apple cider donuts, sold year round.
After a few hours in the hot, humid New England sun, sitting by the fan and curling up on the couch with a hot summer read is the perfect way to spend the afternoon. This summer my eye has been drawn to these blue hue summer reads. An all-time favorite of mine, Tessa Bailey paints the idyllic coastal steamy romance in her book, It Happened One Summer. This was the first blue summer read I fell in love with.. all thanks to Tessa’s quick-wit and encompassing writing that makes you breathe in the sea-breeze and feel the salt water in your hair. With a big, bearded king crab sea Captain and a Hollywood “It girl”, the banter in this book had me grinning just as much as I was blushing. As if you didn’t need another reason to fall in love with, It Happened One Summer’s, Bellinger sisters, Tessa continues with a Bellinger sister FMC steamy seaside romance in her sequel, Hook, Line, and Sinker. If you are into the grumpy x sunshine or friends to lovers troupes, these two books should be immediately added to you TBR.
As we are nearing the end of July, my summer reads list contains solely of beachy blue hues. From the choppy waves of Cape Cod, Massachusetts to the salty shores of Malibu, California, Elin Hilderbran’s Summer of 69’ and Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Malibu Rising carry you through the hot days of the late sixties and early eighties. With nods to historical events in Hilderbran’s novel, flipping through the pages brought me to the streets of Nantucket as the fifth Levin sibling, navigating a changing world. Continuing with the strong family bond theme, Malibu Rising engulfs you in the waves off of the Pacific Coast Highway and brings you along with the Riva family, alternating between decades of heartache, loss, sacrifice, and love. Captivating and iconic, both of these reads top my list of books to read during those steamy July days. Last but not least, a July reading list would not be complete without Emily Henry’s, Beach Read, taking us to the fictional North Bear Shores of Michigan. Enemies to lover troupe fans will swoon for this book as a romance lover and a romance skeptic embark on a summer long challenge. This book is filled with family secrets to uncover and lines to be crossed, with a backdrop of a lake-side midwestern town.
